The remastered version of GTA: San Andreas saw a massive 960% jump in player count after being added to the PS Plus Extra subscription service in June 2024, and unlike many other titles on PS Plus that tend to see a drop in players over time, the popularity of GTA: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition has continued to grow, highlighting the enduring appeal of this classic open-world game.

A new report reveals that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition managed to attract an astonishing number of players after it landed in the PlayStation Plus Extra game catalog in June 2024. Having released in late 2021 as a remaster of the iconic Rockstar open-world crime game, GTA: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition courted a fair bit of controversy at launch due to major technical issues.
In addition to numerous bugs and glitches, complaints also stemmed from the remaster's graphical "upgrades," which supposedly worked against the art direction of the original. Moreover, The Definitive Edition also launched without GTA: San Andreas' beloved couch co-op mode, further adding to frustration among fans. Unsurprisingly, developer Rockstar Games didn't take long to commit to fixes and updates based on fan feedback that substantially improved GTA: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition, allowing it to be in a much better place nearly three years later.

GTA: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition was included in the June 2024 lineup for PS Plus Extra and Premium, and it seems to have garnered plenty of success on the subscription service. According to data sampled from over 3.1 million PlayStation Network accounts, TrueTrophies reports that GTA: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition saw a whopping 960% jump in player count after it was added to PS Plus Extra. However, unlike most other titles in the catalog which experience a dip in their player counts with time, GTA: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition's player base has grown by 1.07% even after a month of being on the service.
A one-percent increase may not appear very remarkable, but TrueTrophies noted for perspective that Dave the Diver, the most-played game on PS Plus Extra in 2024 so far, lost a hefty 51.35% of its player base after one month. The fact that GTA: San Andreas - The Definitive Edition not only sustained a 960% player boost, but increased it further during the same time period is highly impressive, even more so considering its widespread criticism back when it launched in 2021.

The pull of the Grand Theft Auto name itself is strong, and San Andreas is one of the most critically-acclaimed entries in the franchise, making it bound to be successful on PS Plus Extra. As fans continue to enjoy the remaster on the popular subscription service, Rockstar continues to work hard preparing the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6 for its fall 2025 release.
