Nintendo and game director Masahiro Sakurai recently held a dedicated presentation giving fans a detailed first look at Kirby Air Riders, the highly anticipated sequel to Kirby Air Ride, which launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 20, 2025. The presentation, the second Kirby Air Riders-focused event, revealed major gameplay modes, robust customization, and a global demo event.
One of the biggest announcements was Road Trip, a brand-new, story-driven campaign mode. In this mode, players undertake a variety of challenges — from races to battles and “Field Events” — drawing on gameplay styles from Air Ride, City Trial, and Top Ride.
Unlike a simple arcade or challenge mode, Road Trip includes a narrative thread: riding alongside characters such as Kirby, King Dedede, Bandana Waddle Dee, and Starman, players collect machines and items as they progress.
This blend of structured single-player objectives and light storytelling gives the game a sense of progression and purpose.
Longtime Kirby fans will be pleased to know that Top Ride, the classic top-down racing mode from Kirby Air Ride, is returning in Kirby Air Riders.
However, it’s not just a simple revival — the mode includes new content, features, and competitive mechanics. According to Nintendo, Top Ride will support up to 8 players online, and can also be played locally with 3 players + 4 CPU opponents. Players will be able to use Quick Spins, Boost Charges, and Copy Abilities — including a new “Flash” ability that electrifies the rider and shocks nearby rivals. Exclusive items in Top Ride includ Kaboomb, Drift Flames, Drill Driver, and others.
Sakurai also revealed several new tracks for Top Ride including Flower, Flow, Air, Crystal, Steam, and Mountain.

Nintendo revealed multiple new Kirby Air Riders-themed amiibo, which pair riders with their machines. These figures are designed with magnetic attachments: by swapping the machine or rider on the base, the in-game pairing changes to match. Players can also train a “Figure Player” tied to the amiibo, allowing it to gain experience.

Additionally, Kirby Air Riders introduces new playable characters beyond the familiar faces, broadening its roster.
Perhaps the most exciting announcement for players eager to try Kirby Air Riders early is the Global Test Ride, a free online demo event.
The demo is available to Nintendo Switch Online members across two weekends: November 8–9 and November 15–16.
During the demo, players can access Lessons at any time, even outside the event windows. For race fans, Air Ride will feature three courses: Floria Fields, Waveflow Waters, and Mount Amberfalls. The Paddock will also be available, allowing up to 16 players to hang out and join City Trial matches during the test. The full version of the game supports 32 players in the Paddock.
In a somewhat surprising confirmation, Sakurai stated that no downloadable content (DLC) will be released for Kirby Air Riders, and there are no plans to turn it into a long-running series. This suggests that Nintendo and Sakurai view the game as a complete, self-contained experience.
