Rumor has it that Sony may be reviving the classic PaRappa the Rapper franchise for the PS5, with rapper Playboi Carti reportedly set to voice the title character. Other musical artists are also said to be involved in the project, which could breathe new life into the beloved rhythm game series. PaRappa the Rapper is not the only classic PlayStation IP that may be making a comeback, as there are also rumors of potential revivals for Fear Effect and Patapon, exciting longtime fans of these iconic game franchises.

Sony could be planning a new PaRappa the Rapper game for the PlayStation 5, according to a new rumor. PaRappa the Rapper is a classic PlayStation game that became popular in the 90s, but it has been largely forgotten by Sony in recent years.
PaRappa the Rapper was originally released in 1996 for the PS1. The game stood out due to being an excellent rhythm game for the PS1 at a time when the genre was not very common, and partly because of its charismatic main character, the rapper dog PaRappa. The series received a spin-off called Um Jammer Lammy in 1999, and a sequel for the PS2 in 2001. However, more games were never released after that, and PaRappa only appeared in ports or had special participation in titles such as PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Astro's Playroom.

Now, a new report made by DJ Akademiks indicates that the rapper Playboi Carti is currently closing a multi-year deal with Sony to be the voice of the main character in a new PaRappa the Rapper game. The report also states that other artists will likely be involved in the project, which is rumored to be a PS5 game. While rumors such as this one should obviously be taken with a grain of salt as gamers wait for official confirmation, PaRappa the Rapper was a popular franchise published by Sony back in the day, so the company may want to bring back one of the best rhythm games ever made to its current console.

If the rumors of a new PaRappa the Rapper game for PS5 are confirmed, it wouldn't be the only classic PlayStation franchise making a comeback. Last month, it was announced that Fear Effect, the cult-classic PS1 series, will be receiving a remaster set to release on modern platforms like PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC, published by Limited Run Games. Unlike the PaRappa the Rapper rumors, the Fear Effect remaster will not be a brand-new game, but rather a remastered version of the original.

Another PlayStation classic that could be seeing a revival soon is Patapon. Originally released for the PSP in 2007, Patapon is a unique rhythm-strategy game where players act as an invisible deity guiding small creatures called Patapons. Rumors of a new Patapon project began circulating after Sony showcased some brief snippets of the game as part of unveiling its new visualization facility Torchlight during CES 2024. However, an official confirmation of a new Patapon game in development is still pending.
