Modder BrawlerAce has released the "Persona 4 Golden Fog Restoration" mod, which aims to recreate the nostalgic atmosphere of the original PS2 version by adding fog to various areas of the game, including the dungeons, Velvet Room, and shopping district, with the goal of eventually restoring fog to all fields, though some areas may prove more challenging to modify.

One modder of Persona 4 Golden has released a brand-new mod for the game, giving it a visual overhaul that should be nostalgic for players of the PS2 version. Persona 4 Golden is an enhanced port of the original Persona 4, first released on the PlayStation Vita handheld console in 2012. This version of the classic JRPG overhauled a number of aspects compared to the original, which included new mechanics, Personas, social links, and even added new characters like Marie. Golden was eventually ported to the PC in 2020, and brought over to all modern gaming platforms in 2023.
While Persona 4 Golden is an improvement over the original in quite a number of ways, one aspect some players feel is partially lost with Golden is the atmosphere. Persona 4 Golden removed the thick fog effects that covered the dungeons in the PS2 version. With Golden no longer being exclusive to the Vita, it has opened the floodgates for a modder to reimplement this important element.

Released for the 16th anniversary of the original Persona 4, this mod, called Fog Restoration on Gamebanana, was created by BrawlerAce. The Fog restoration mod aims to restore the visual identity of the original and overhaul the game to make it better resemble the PS2 version of Persona 4. This mod is a work-in-progress, meaning not every single area is completely finished, but was released for fans to try out. A video was released in celebration of the mod's release, which compared how some of the areas looked between the original and with the fog effects applied.
BrawlerAce's Fog Restoration Mod for Persona 4 Golden primarily focuses on adding thick fog effects to the game's dungeons and related areas within the TV world. The mod aims to closely match the visual style of the original PS2 version, with all dungeons receiving this treatment. Additionally, other explorable areas, such as the tutorial sequence in the protagonist's dream, the Velvet Room, and the shopping district, have also been overhauled to include the fog. The mod even extends its reach to the regular and boss battle areas, ensuring a consistent atmospheric experience.

According to BrawlerAce, the ultimate goal of this mod is to eventually restore the fog to all the explorable overworld fields in Persona 4 Golden. However, the modder notes that the game's exclusive areas, such as Shichiri Beach and Okina City, may prove more challenging to modify, as there are no direct references to them in the original Persona 4 title. Despite the immense undertaking, many fans are delighted to see the restoration of the iconic and timeless visual style of the original Persona 4 through this mod.
