Call of Duty's upcoming Season 5 will feature a collaboration with WWE, potentially adding some popular wrestlers as playable operators, following previous crossover content that has incorporated characters and personalities like Homelander, Ghostface, and Nicki Minaj; additionally, a Marvel collaboration is also rumored to be on the way to coincide with the release of the Deadpool & Wolverine film later this month.
Call of Duty has just announced it will be crossing over with the WWE. The new collaboration will hit Call of Duty during season 5, bringing the world of WWE into Activision's long-running FPS franchise.
Over the years, the Call of Duty franchise has leaned further into the live service arena, providing players with an unprecedented amount of extra paid content compared to older entries in the series. Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale, ushered in a new age for the Call of Duty brand, offering a daunting list of paid add-ons such as weapon skins and new operators. As Call of Duty: Warzone has grown more and more popular, collaborations have become more unexpected and exciting, with some of the world's biggest stars and Hollywood's most recognizable characters appearing in the game. Now, Call of Duty is getting players ready to embrace the world of WWE.
Call of Duty's newly-announced WWE collaboration was revealed on Twitter, offering players a brief glimpse at what they can expect in season 5. The short but sweet six-second video shows off a wrestling ring accompanied by cheers from an off-screen crowd. "It's about to be a smackdown," reads the caption to the post. While nothing other than the crossover was confirmed, it's likely previous and current WWE legends like Randy Orton, John Cena, Rey Mysterio, and a whole host of others could be added as operators to Call of Duty. It's been rumored that Call of Duty will also collaborate with Marvel to celebrate the release of Deadpool & Wolverine later this month, potentially adding two new operators into the mix later on in season 5.
Crossovers are nothing new for Call of Duty, with both Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone receiving a multitude of wacky and out-of-this-world characters as operators over the years. Some of the most notorious operators to hit the in-game store include Homelander from Amazon's hit superhero satire series The Boys, horror legend Ghostface from the Scream franchise, and rap icon Nicki Minaj.
This announcement of a WWE collaboration for Call of Duty's upcoming Season 5 comes as fans eagerly anticipate the next iteration of the Call of Duty brand, Black Ops 6. Releasing on October 24, 2024, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 sees longtime developer Treyarch return to the wheel for the first time since 2020's Cold War, ushering in a new chapter for campaign, multiplayer, and zombie game modes. Treyarch confirmed support for Warzone will continue alongside Black Ops 6, ensuring many more collaborations and crossovers are likely in store for Call of Duty later this year.
