The remake adopts the acclaimed HD-2D visual style, which combines classic pixel art with modern lighting, depth effects, and 3D camera work—first popularized by Octopath Traveler. This style brings familiar towns, dungeons, and monsters to life with vibrant detail while respecting the games’ 1980s roots.

New scenarios have been added to both games, including full dialogue expansions. In Dragon Quest II, the previously non-playable Princess of Cannock is now a full-fledged party member, while new regions and quests offer expanded lore for longtime fans.
Producer Masaaki Hayasaka confirmed that both remakes will feature significantly more story and dialogue than their original Famicom versions. The word count reportedly jumps from tens of thousands to millions, with Dragon Quest I especially receiving expanded narrative sequences. Hayasaka also teased a “big surprise twist” that veteran players wouldn’t expect.
The gameplay system has been overhauled with modern conveniences and new features:
✅ Dragon Quest I now supports battles with multiple enemies, rather than just one-on-one.
✅ A new system called “Sigils” allows characters to boost skills and unlock tactical advantages.
✅ Dragon Quest II adds a new playable character (Princess Matilda of Cannock), an underwater dungeon, and several new enemies and areas.
✅ Both games include mini-medals, new side quests, and a mini-game called Tombola, where players can win prizes.
Other upgrades include improved menus, modern UI, battle speed options, and autosave features—making the experience much smoother for newcomers.
A Collector’s Edition is available via the Square Enix Store, featuring physical goods such as monster & character blocks, the Outstanding Outfit Kit, and exclusive digital wallpapers.
Square Enix will also release a digital Erdrick Trilogy Collection, bundling Dragon Quest I, II, and III HD-2D into one downloadable set.

✅ There is no upgrade path from Switch to Switch 2.
✅ Cross-save between the two Switch versions is not supported.
✅ The Switch version running on Switch 2 will function as it does on the original Switch, with no performance improvements.
This remake is more than a visual refresh—it’s a deep reimagining of two foundational JRPGs. By blending expanded narratives, strategic enhancements, and updated visuals, Square Enix is offering both longtime fans and new players a definitive way to experience the beginnings of the Dragon Quest legend.
By bundling I and II, the publisher fast-tracks completion of the Erdrick Trilogy, giving fans a complete story arc in a modern format. If it performs well, the success of this remake may pave the way for HD-2D versions of Dragon Quest IV–VI, which fans have long requested.
In short, DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake is a thoughtful, content-rich revival of two beloved RPGs that defined the genre. With narrative surprises, mechanical upgrades, and HD-2D visuals, it’s shaping up to be a must-play title this fall for fans of Japanese role-playing games.
