Square Enix has partnered with Xbox Design Lab to offer two limited-edition Xbox controllers commemorating the launch of Final Fantasy XIV's fifth expansion, Dawntrail, which introduces graphical enhancements and new job classes to the game, with the controllers featuring Pictomancer and Viper-inspired designs available for purchase and customization, with the Viper-themed Elite Series 2 controller carrying a higher price tag.
To celebrate the launch of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, Square Enix has collaborated with the Xbox Design Lab to unveil a pair of themed controllers, including a Standard model inspired by the Pictomancer and an Elite Series 2 design based on the Viper, both of which were showcased on the Final Fantasy XIV social media channels, with additional customization options available for players to personalize through the Xbox Design Lab.
The highly anticipated fifth expansion for Square Enix's acclaimed MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, marks the start of a new chapter for the game, introducing major graphical enhancements as well as the new Viper and Pictomancer jobs, aiming to move past the challenging launch of the previous Endwalker expansion, which was plagued by lengthy queue times. While Dawntrail's queues have been relatively shorter in comparison, the expansion has also faced some notable bugs and issues that the development team, led by producer and director Naoki Yoshida, has acknowledged and committed to addressing, apologizing for the inconveniences and assuring players that all lingering problems will be resolved.
To commemorate the full release of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, Square Enix has collaborated with Xbox to offer a pair of customizable controllers designed after the expansion's new Viper and Pictomancer jobs, as showcased on the game's official Twitter page. The Pictomancer-inspired controller, available starting at $79.98 through the Xbox Design Lab, features a Dream Vapor design with a pastel pink D-Pad, light blue analog sticks, and purple bumpers and triggers, allowing players to further personalize the standard Xbox Wireless Controller, while the Viper-themed design is represented by the more premium Elite Series 2 controller, providing fans with opportunities to celebrate the latest Final Fantasy XIV expansion through their choice of specialized gaming peripherals.
Building upon the Pictomancer-themed standard controller, Square Enix has also unveiled an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 design inspired by the Viper, the signature job of the Dawntrail expansion, featuring a garnet, black, silver, and dark green color scheme accented by rubberized grips on the back and sides, with this premium Viper-inspired Elite controller carrying a starting price of $149.99, nearly double that of the Pictomancer model, though both designs will remain available through the Xbox Design Lab for players to customize, ensuring compatibility across the PC and Xbox Series X/S versions of Final Fantasy XIV.
Despite the recent launch of the Dawntrail expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, which has already seen players progressing rapidly through the new main story content, Square Enix is wasting no time in maintaining the momentum, with the unveiling of the Viper and Pictomancer-themed Xbox controllers through the Design Lab collaboration serving as an early promotional effort, though the long-term plans to sustain player engagement and excitement around the latest expansion remain to be seen.
